St Andrew’s Psalter Lane Church Eco Group

The SAPLC Eco Group is very proud of its Silver Eco Church Award!

The free online survey and supporting resources from A Rocha UK are designed to equip churches to express their care for God’s world in their worship and teaching; in how they look after their buildings and land; in how they engage with their local community and in global campaigns, and in the personal lifestyles of their congregation.

Their vision is for churches of all denominations to care for creation as an integral part of loving their neighbours and following God faithfully.

Here at SAPLC, we hold regular Repair Cafés in church; volunteer repair people are on hand to make small repairs and teach people how they can do these themselves, with the aim of reducing waste by re-using and recycling items that would otherwise be thrown away. Keep an eye out for the next Repair Café and bring your wonky stuff to be fixed! There is no charge for repairs, but any donations, and profits from the refreshments, are given to a different charity each time.

We have regular Green Communion services and constantly look for ways to reduce the energy use of our lovely church building.

One of our latest plans for a 'greener' way of life is growing vegetables on the land behind the church.

We have also held events such as the Carbon Footprint Drop-in and the Greener Summer Holidays events and we hosted the Northern Eco Church Conference in October 2017.

Weekly Eco Tip

Eco tip – Step up to the bar: Instead of liquid soap in a plastic bottle, try a cleaner alternative: package-free bar soap. You’ll help cut back on the billions of pounds of plastic waste generated each year — including often unrecyclable pump dispensers. There are a few “direct to consumer” brands that sell glass bottles and biodegradable vials of concentrated soap — just add water!

‘Love, Anger & Betrayal’ Book Tour

Jonathon Porritt, veteran climate campaigner, advisor and writer, has consistently highlighted the environmental crisis and its threat to social and ecological justice – over 50 years of constantly looking for solutions.

His newly published, eleventh book, ‘Love, Anger & Betrayal’, visits the latest generation of climate activists and documents the experiences of 26 insightful young people – his co-authors – who joined Just Stop Oil’s Nonviolent Civil Resistance. The book reveals their passion for a just and sustainable transition away from our global economic and cultural dependence on fossil fuels. But who, with the political power, is listening?

For more than fifty years Jonathon Porritt has been campaigning for the environment and social justice, while simultaneously advising governments, businesses and NGOs. The author of many highly respected books, he still believes that it is ‘not too late’ to avoid climate breakdown. But the thrust of this book, ‘Love, Anger & Betrayal’, is that very soon it will be.

8 December, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, Dorothy Fleming Theatre, Charles Street Building, 133 Charles St, Sheffield S1 2ND

South Yorkshire Climate Alliance

We are an alliance of local organisations working together on climate action. We bring together not only environmental groups, but media organisations, community groups, businesses and more. Our rebrand reflects their existing partnerships with over 60 organisations, with connections in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

Sheffield Climate Alliance was formed over 10 years ago by a group of citizens concerned about the lack of action on the climate emergency. Now, we are well established in lobbying for local climate action and engaging with communities in creative ways. In 2020, we were awarded a development grant of nearly £200,000 by the National Lottery’s Community Fund to carry out a climate action project, which is now called Can Do South Yorkshire.

We're so excited to continue to campaign for climate action, and we look forward to expanding our reach across South Yorkshire even further. Watch our new video to find out more about what we do. Thanks for all your support!
