Becoming a Church of Sanctuary

As we journey to becoming a Church of Sanctuary, we plan to introduce various activities over the coming months for members of SAPL to contribute to the process. A constant action will be challenging some of the myths repeated in the media by informing ourselves of the actual situation of asylum seekers and refugees. Our aim is to provide a ‘myth busting challenge’ most weeks.

Answers to last week’s questions:

People living in hotels are expected to survive on £1.42 a day

They may sleep in beds, bunks, or sofa beds in the various accommodation e.g. hotels, army camps and shared houses.

The companies who provide asylum accommodation in hotels and other accommodation are expected to make around £750 millions over the duration of their contracts with the Home Office

This week’s questions:

1. Is it illegal to become a refugee?

2. Why don’t asylum seekers and refugees work?

3. Do we get more asylum seekers than anywhere else in Europe?

Please note that Refugee Week this year is June 15-26th. It would be great if we could celebrate it in some way! And the first ever Sanctuary Sunday will be 24th June.
