Notice of Motion
Notice of Motion on the Home Secretary's proposed changes to asylum procedures
Notice of Motion presented to and approved by the Sheffield Circuit Meeting on 25 November 2025; this was presented to and accepted by SAPLC ECC at its meeting on 24th November.
A response to the Home Secretary’s proposals announced on 17 November 2025
The Sheffield Methodist Circuit Meeting deplores the recent pronouncement by the Home Secretary of new measures intended to deter asylum seekers and therefore urges its congregations:
(a) to affirm the God-given dignity of all people, not least those who have been forced to flee their homeland;
(b) to recognise the valuable contribution that refugees have made and continue to make to British society especially in the NHS;
(c) in line with the Refugee Council’s response to express their concern about the possible effects of the steps being proposed and as a matter of urgency to lobby their MPs to do the same;
(d) to give generously to the City of Sanctuary this Christmas.
Proposer: Jenny Carpenter Seconder: Maryke Turvey
Jenny wants to point out that both Abtisam Mohammed (Sheffield Central MP) and Olivia Blake (Sheffield Hallam MP) have spoken strongly against the Government proposals.
